Fear plus a specific remedy

Never show a loss or risk message without an obvious, specific action next to it, such as 'turn on two-factor now' or 'free up 2 GB'. Chou draws on a classic health study: fear alone led to denial, while fear plus a concrete plan led to action.

Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.StartReturnPay

Plain label: warning with a one-click fixAlso known as: Avoiding the Avoidance, fear appeal with a plan

How it works

When people see a threat but no clear way to act, they protect themselves by dismissing it. Action follows when acting makes them feel capable (CD2), so the remedy must be specific and easy. In Leventhal's tetanus study, only fear combined with a specific plan produced high action; a plan alone produced less. Ambiguous penalties add uncertainty (CD7) and make fear paralyzing.

What the research says

  • Leventhal, Singer and Jones (1965) gave students tetanus pamphlets with fear only, fear plus a specific plan, or a plan only; fear plus a plan led to the most vaccinations.

How to build it

Web
Security warnings that open straight into the setup step ('Turn on two-factor now', one click).
Mobile
'Storage almost full: free up 2 GB' with a button that lists the largest items.
B2B
Usage-limit alerts that include the exact upgrade or clean-up action, not just the limit.

What can go wrong

  • Scare copy with no call to action.
  • Remedies that are vague or take many steps.
  • Ambiguous penalties that leave users guessing.

Pairs well with

  • Apply the rule to every loss-framed message in the product.
  • Combine with forgiving loss rules (grace systems).
