Countdown Timer (GT#65)

A live display of time running toward the start or end of a real opportunity, such as a trial end or a seat hold, with the action button right beside it. It beats a static expiry date; fake or resetting timers are deception and draw regulators' attention.

How it works

Watching time run out makes a coming loss concrete (CD8, with CD6 urgency), and without awareness of the loss there is no motivation. Chou recommends the smallest sensible unit, often seconds. He pairs it with the end-of-auction rush and calls that combination mostly Black Hat. Save second-by-second timers for the few critical moments and put a direct action next to every timer.

Evidence warning

How to build it

B2B
'Trial ends in 2d 04h' in the app header, linking straight to plans, for real trial ends only.
E-commerce
A real seat or cart hold that releases the inventory when it expires.
Email and SMS
A live timer in a deadline email for a launch or webinar.

What can go wrong

  • Fake, resetting or evergreen timers.
  • Timers with no action button beside them.
  • Timers everywhere, which breeds anxiety and distrust.

Pairs well with

  • Use only at a critical moment, then return to White Hat (OCT-M16).
  • Announce the deadline up front.
