White, then Black, then White at conversion (OCT-M16)
Build a White Hat experience first, add honest urgency or scarcity at the moment of the Desired Action, then return quickly to White Hat with true reassurance that the choice was smart, popular and good. Chou calls it Careful Transitioning; without the urgency, people intend to act and never do.
Plain label: honest deadline inside a good experienceAlso known as: Careful Transitioning, White-Black-White
How it works
White Hat drives make people feel good but create no urgency, so a product that is only White Hat sees long decision delays. Black Hat at the decision converts the people already leaning yes; nobody converts under pressure unless they already liked the product. A Black Hat purchase followed by nothing leaves buyers deflated, so true reassurance after the purchase completes the sequence, and the Endgame stays White Hat.
Evidence warning
Chou also describes a post-purchase celebration in a mobile game that trains repeat spending; keep reassurance true and avoid conditioning compulsive purchases.
What the research says
Chou's own seed round stalled until he announced it was closing and enforced the cap, turning money away (n = 1).

How to build it
- B2B
- Early mastery wins during the trial, an honest countdown in the final days, then a post-upgrade screen with true peer-usage figures and a first-week plan.
- E-commerce
- A genuinely limited run announced in advance, then an order confirmation that shows the product's impact and care tips.
- Web
- Founding-member pricing that really ends at a stated number of members, enforced publicly.
What can go wrong
- Urgency before users have had a win.
- Fake deadlines or caps.
- Nothing after the purchase, which leaves buyers deflated.
Pairs well with
- Announce the trial end up front.
- Use GT#65 Countdown Timer only with real deadlines.
