Status Quo Sloth (GT#85)
People tend not to change what they already do. In Discovery this blocks adoption, because convinced prospects promise to start 'tomorrow' and rarely do; in the Endgame it protects you, because habits resist change. Lower the switching cost for newcomers, and let your own moat rest on real value.
Plain label: switching inertiaAlso known as: Status Quo Sloth, inertia, switching cost
How it works
Inertia is a loss-avoidance force (CD8): changing a routine feels riskier than keeping it. Chou builds it on purpose through habit loops and investment, citing Eyal's Hook directly. To overcome a rival's inertia he combines a clear loss frame, a fading opportunity and a deadline, then follows with White Hat. For newcomers, the product-friendly version is removing the effort of switching, such as a one-click import.
How to build it
- B2B
- One-click import from the incumbent tool and a prefilled workspace, so starting today costs less than waiting.
- Web
- A 'start in 60 seconds' path in place of 'remind me later'.
- E-commerce
- A one-tap 'your usual' reorder, with cancellation as easy as sign-up.
What can go wrong
- Cancellation mazes used to keep users.
- Habits that no longer serve users but are hard to break.
- Mistaking inertia for loyalty and letting the product stagnate.
Pairs well with
- Counter a rival's inertia with an honest cost-of-waiting view (GT#84).
- Keep cancellation as easy as sign-up.
