Evanescent Opportunities (GT#86)

An opportunity that disappears unless the user acts now: a flash deal with real stock, a donation-matching window, new content free for 72 hours. It is compelling enough that people drop what they are doing; fake deadlines and 'approved today only' offers are deceptive.

How it works

A chance about to vanish feels like a loss (CD8), and when it appears unpredictably it adds curiosity (CD7) and scarcity (CD6). Chou's game example is a treasure creature that shows up at random, flees and sometimes drops great loot, which players chase at any cost. In products, the honest versions are real windows: charity matches, live events, early pricing that truly ends.

How to build it

E-commerce
Random in-session flash deals with real stock counts and real end times.
Web
New premium content free for 72 hours, then members-only, with the schedule published.
B2B
End-of-beta pricing that genuinely ends on a stated date for new customers.

What can go wrong

  • Fake deadlines or 'approved today only' offers.
  • Windows that reopen right after closing.
  • Purchases nobody wanted, followed by refunds.

Pairs well with

  • Publish how windows are set.
  • Follow the purchase with true White Hat reassurance (OCT-M16).

    Booking.com: urgency claims meet regulators

Feb 6, 2019: Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Agoda, ebookers and trivago committed to the UK CMA to stop false availability or popularity claims and pressure selling by Sept 1, 2019. EU-wide commitments followed (2019-2020). In Sept 2019, Which? found 5 of 10 checked claims misleading.
