Deadlines that really end
Use time limits only when they are real and enforced every time: launch pricing that ends, an enrollment window that closes, a trial offer with a fixed date. A real deadline turns intention into action; a timer that resets on reload teaches buyers to ignore every deadline.
Plain label: honest deadlineAlso known as: deadline, time-limited offer, enrollment window, countdown, launch pricing
How it works
A time limit makes an opportunity scarce, and people act to avoid losing it; deadlines also stop the indefinite postponing that lets intentions fade. Salespeople in the book used now-or-never offers precisely to keep customers from thinking it over, which is the version that comes back as regret. An honest deadline that leaves enough time to judge the offer captures the action without the regret.
In the book. Deadlines create interest where none existed, and the right-now form exists to stop deliberation (Ch.7, pp.181-183). INF-T-SC-03 (Influence Ch.7, p.181)
In a product [S]. Deadlines that end, with the later price published and enough time to decide.
Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. Deadlines reduce postponement in field studies; urgency without value raises refunds.
Evidence warning
Resetting or evergreen countdowns are a common target of consumer regulators (CASE-M05).
Read 7-day refunds and D30 retention with every deadline test; urgency can pull in buyers who leave.
What the research says
A vacuum-cleaner sales manager told trainees that now-or-never offers exist to keep prospects from going home to think it over.
Influence Ch.7, p.183
In field studies, gift certificates with a shorter deadline were redeemed more often than ones with a longer deadline, because people stopped postponing.

Before you start
- At least one segment already has product-market fit.
- A deadline the team will enforce every time, with the post-deadline price published
How to build it
- Web
- Run launch pricing with a fixed end date shown on the pricing page and in emails; after the date, the published regular price applies to everyone.
- Email and SMS
- Send one reminder 48 hours before a real enrollment window closes, with the date, the time zone and the price afterward.
- E-commerce
- For sales, show the end date and time, and never restart a timer for a returning visitor.
By product type
- E-commerce / DTC
- Real sale end dates at checkout are in season from M1 for transaction archetypes.
What can go wrong
- Timers that reset on reload or per visitor.
- Windows too short to evaluate the offer.
- Extending the deadline again and again, which trains people to wait.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with OCT-M16 (White-Black-White): a mastery win before the deadline and a celebration after it.
- Pairs with in-t-sc-13 for trials.
