Habit Testing: identify, codify, modify
A repeating loop for proving habits with data. Identify a realistic cadence for a devoted user and who meets it, codify the early steps those users share, then modify the product to send new users down that path, and measure again. Ideas from the Hook Model are only hypotheses until this loop tests them.
Plain label: find, map and spread the habitAlso known as: habit testing, Habit Path, devoted user, habitual user rate, identify codify modify, cohort analysis
The three steps
- Identify. Write an honest cadence for a devoted user, calibrated on typical users and public benchmarks, never on the most extreme ones (a social network may be several times a day; a film-review site once or twice a week). Count who meets it and set up signup cohorts. HK-MEA01 (Hooked Ch.8) HK-MEA02 (Hooked Ch.8)
- Codify. Check the share of habitual users. The book's rule of thumb is that fewer than about 5% means the wrong audience or a product to rethink Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.; a lasting business usually needs far more. Then compare what habitual users did early with users who left, and look for the shared Habit Path and its thresholds. HK-MEA03 (Hooked Ch.8) HK-MEA04 (Hooked Ch.8)
- Modify. Change onboarding, content and features (including removing some) so more new users follow that path, then compare the new cohorts with the old. Repeat for each feature. HK-MEA05 (Hooked Ch.8) HK-T13 (Hooked Ch.3) HK-ACT43 (Hooked Ch.8)
Cautions
- A shared early action is a correlation; confirm it with an experiment before steering everyone toward it.
- Read habit outcomes on the habit horizon: weeks to months, with release dates marked on cohort charts.
- Engagement is not a business on its own; track monetization and acquisition alongside it. HK-MON12 (Hooked Ch.8)
How we use it
Codify feeds the habitual-user signal of the Stage Fix and the Value track; Modify is the Start track's Habit Path work. The 5% figure is shown as a grade-D heuristic, and the cadence is the route's, not a universal daily target [Analyst].
Limits
What we don’t claim
- The Hook Model is a practical design tool, not a validated or complete theory of behavior.Hooked, Introduction
- This is a practitioner heuristic (grade D): test it in your own product before relying on it.
- The threshold is a heuristic, not a measured cut-off.
- The evidence is correlational until it is tested in your product.
- Habit metrics need the longer habit horizon (weeks to months) before they can be read.
