Add an investment step to every loop
Audit every prompt-to-reward loop and end each with a small action that stores value or sets up the next prompt: save, follow, tag, schedule or reply. A loop of prompt, action and reward alone changes behavior only in the moment.
Plain label: close each loop with an investmentAlso known as: fourth step, investment inventory, feedback loop vs hook, save follow tag schedule
How it works
A cue, an action and a reward form a feedback loop that shifts behavior only while it runs, like a roadside speed display that slows drivers on the spot. Without something the user puts in that improves the next pass, nothing builds up and nothing calls them back.
How to build it
- Web
- After reading a recommended article, offer to follow the topic.
- Mobile
- After a workout summary, offer to schedule the next one.
- B2B
- After an alert is resolved, offer 'mute similar' or 'tell me if it happens again'.
- Email and SMS
- Digest items with save and more-like-this buttons.
What can go wrong
- Investment steps that add friction to the core action.
- Steps that store nothing the user benefits from.
Pairs well with
- Let the investment schedule the next prompt.
- Ask right after the reward.

RoundPinterest: Hooked's textbook example, then and now
640M global monthly active users in Q2 2026, an all-time high, up 11% YoY and the 11th straight quarter of double-digit user growth (Pinterest release, Aug 4, 2026). About 50M in the book era. Many causes; the Hook is not claimed to have caused the growth.

- This is a practitioner heuristic (grade D): test it in your own product before relying on it.
- Habit metrics need the longer habit horizon (weeks to months) before they can be read.
