How it works

People want to feel competent. Immediate feedback on a small step, with some uncertainty about the result, turns difficulty into challenge, and progression that unlocks new abilities keeps the next goal in view. Feedback that keeps attention on the task helps; feedback that shifts attention to self-worth can hurt.

What the research says

  • Across 607 effect sizes, feedback helped performance on average (d near 0.4), yet roughly one in three feedback interventions lowered it.

Kluger & DeNisi, Psychological Bulletin, 1996

  • Gamification in learning showed behavioral outcomes of about g = 0.25 across 9 studies.

Sailer & Homner, Educational Psychology Review, 2020
