Run a release pipeline that outpaces consumption

If your variety can be used up, track how engagement fades with cohort age and run a release pipeline faster than users consume it. Check that each release adds a new source of variety, not just a new theme on the old one.

Plain label: release calendar against fading noveltyAlso known as: novelty decay, studio model, live ops, content calendar, re-skins, finite variability, entertainment pipeline

How it works

Finite content becomes predictable with use, and predictability ends the pull. Hits fade, so businesses built on finite content survive by keeping a steady portfolio of new releases and a way to distribute them. Re-theming the same mechanic adds little novelty: one games company's run of re-themed titles came before a steep fall in its value.

Evidence warning

What the research says

  • A location-based game raised walking by about 955 steps a day, and the effect faded by week six (peer-reviewed).

    CASE-M23 (BMJ study)

  • A social-games publisher was valued above $10B in March 2012; its stock fell more than 80% by November 2012 (book account).

How to build it

Mobile
A live-ops calendar of seasonal events that add new mechanics, not only new art.
Web
An editorial calendar sized to how fast readers finish what exists.
B2B
New report types or benchmarks each quarter for a data product.

What can go wrong

  • Re-theming the same mechanic.
  • A pipeline that can't keep pace, followed by a cliff.

Pairs well with

  • Get variety from people and creation where possible.
  • Plot the novelty-decay curve by cohort age.

Pokemon GO: the extra steps faded

+955 steps a day in the first week after installing, falling over the following weeks and back to pre-install levels by week 6 (Howe et al., BMJ, Dec 13, 2016; about 1,182 US adults aged 18-35).
