Social proof

People work out what is right partly by watching what others do, and the more people, the stronger the cue. Social proof is strongest under uncertainty and when the others are similar; it is weakest, and most often wrong, when crowds are following each other rather than information.

Plain label: people look to others when unsureAlso known as: social proof, conformity, descriptive norms, bystander effect, herd behavior

The principle (Ch.4, pp.87-91). Other people's behavior is a shortcut to what is correct. It usually reduces mistakes, which is also why fakes pass.

Conditions INF-M-35 (Influence Ch.4, p.98)

  • Uncertainty: ambiguous or unfamiliar situations (Ch.4, p.98), see in-t-sp-12.
  • Similarity: others like us (Ch.4, pp.107-109), see in-t-sp-17 and in-t-sp-19.
  • Number and variety amplify both.

Uncertainty, not apathy INF-M-37 (Influence Ch.4, p.104). Bystanders fail to help when they are unsure whether help is needed and whose job it is; a specific request to one person removes both doubts (Ch.4, pp.101-106), see in-t-sp-15.

Cascades INF-M-42 (Influence Ch.4, p.122). Crowds can snowball on an early, even rigged, signal (Ch.4, pp.122-125). Rankings and counts need protection against early herding.

In a product [S]. Proof at the point of doubt, matched to the visitor, live and verifiable (in-t-sp-04, in-t-sp-24), with less proof and more substance for experts and high-stakes decisions.

Evidence. Uncertainty and similarity effects are well replicated; some descriptive-norm field effects have failed to replicate in new settings.
