Trustworthy shortcuts: a recommended plan by fit

Give overloaded buyers a shortcut they can trust: a "Recommended for you" plan based on what they told you, sensible defaults that change in one click, and badges whose criteria are visible. A shortcut saves effort only if it reliably points to the right choice.

How it works

People under time pressure or with little expertise decide by shortcut, and a clear recommendation or default is the easiest one to take. When the shortcut is based on the buyer's stated needs, it cuts choice effort and regret together; when it points to the highest-margin option, buyers who later notice downgrade or leave, and the shortcut stops being trusted.

In the book. Shortcuts are how people cope with overload, and they usually point the right way (Ch.1, pp.4-6). INF-T-FN-11 (Influence Ch.1, p.4)

In a product [S]. Make the shortcut honest: a recommendation computed from what the buyer said or did, defaults that serve the user, and badges with their criteria on hover.

Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. Defaults and recommendations move choices strongly; whether the effect lasts depends on whether the shortcut fits.

What the research says

  • The book treats shortcuts as a rational response to overload and notes that people lean on them most when rushed, uncertain or inexpert.

    Influence Ch.1, pp.4-6

  • Organ-donor consent was far higher in countries with an opt-out default than in otherwise similar countries with an opt-in default.

Before you start

  • Two or three questions (team size, main use) or usage data that map to a plan

How to build it

Web
Ask two questions before the plan grid (team size, main use) and mark one plan "Recommended for you" with a one-line reason ("Fits teams that share files across two or three departments").
B2B
In the trial-to-paid step, preselect the plan that matches the account's actual seats and usage, with the full comparison one click away.
Mobile
Default settings to the choice most similar users keep, with a visible "Change" link; never default to paid add-ons.

What can go wrong

  • A recommendation that always lands on the priciest plan is soon ignored.
  • Too many questions before the recommendation add the effort it was meant to save.

Pairs well with

  • Pairs with in-t-au-08: sometimes the recommendation should be the cheaper plan.
  • Pairs with in-t-fn-06: the recommended badge sits inside a premium-first grid.
