Ask through someone they know
Route the ask through a person the prospect knows and likes: early on, the founder asking people personally; later, a team admin inviting colleagues, a host or creator selling to their audience, a friend's group-buy link. People say yes to people, and refusing a friend feels different from refusing a company.
Plain label: friend or founder as the askerAlso known as: friend as requester, host selling, founder-led asks, warm introduction, admin invites colleagues
How it works
Liking for the person making a request transfers to the request, and an existing friendship is the strongest source of liking. At product-selling parties, the social bond with the host predicted buying twice as strongly as liking the products. The pull is strong enough that people buy to avoid offending the friend, which is why the ask must be easy to decline without social cost.
In the book. We say yes to people we like, and the strongest version borrows an existing friendship, as product parties did with friends as hosts (Ch.5, pp.126-128). INF-T-LK-01 (Influence Ch.5, p.126)
In a product [S]. The founder's own asks early on; later, admins, hosts and friends as the requester.
Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. Referred customers show higher value in field data; the book's figures are company-era.
Evidence warning
Measure referred users' refunds and churn against organic users (INF-K-30); purchases driven by friendship can carry regret.
What the research says
At home product parties, guests' bond with the host predicted purchases twice as strongly as their preference for the products.
Influence Ch.5, p.127 (Frenzer & Davis)
Customers acquired through a bank's referral program had higher margins and retention, and were worth about 16% more, than other customers.

How to build it
- B2B
- Before scaling paid channels, have the founder personally message the first 50 prospects in their network and ask for a call or a trial.
- Web
- Let team admins invite colleagues with a message that comes from the admin by name and shows what the team has already set up.
- E-commerce
- Group-buy or gift links that show the friend's name and photo through checkout, with a plain "No thanks" that does not notify the friend.
What can go wrong
- Friends used as undisclosed sales agents.
- Notifying the inviter when a friend declines.
- Asks that work only because refusing is awkward, which show up as refunds.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with in-t-lk-02: the referral page names the person who referred.
- Pairs with in-t-lk-21: the friend asks right after a success.
