Ask-free appreciation

Send occasional messages that only appreciate the customer, with no call to action: a thank-you after the first purchase, a sign-up anniversary, a year in review, a handwritten note for top customers. Liking grows through pleasant, repeated contact, and the absence of an ask is what makes it read as sincere.

Plain label: thank-you with no sales askAlso known as: thank-you note, anniversary message, appreciation card, appreciation touchpoint

How it works

People like those who like them, and pleasant, familiar contact raises liking further. A record-setting car salesman mailed every past customer a monthly card that said only that he liked them. The effect depends on the contact staying pleasant and infrequent; frequent "we miss you" messages become nagging, and unpleasant contact lowers liking.

In the book. A salesman's monthly cards said only that he liked his customers (Ch.5, pp.128, 132), and compliments and pleasant contact produce liking (Ch.5, pp.131-133). INF-T-LK-06 (Influence Ch.5, p.132)

Evidence Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.. Liking research supports the mechanism; product evidence is mostly anecdotal.

What the research says

  • A record-setting car salesman sent each of his more than 13,000 customers a monthly card expressing liking and nothing else (reported figures).

    Influence Ch.5, pp.128, 132 (Girard)

  • In a classic study, people liked a flatterer most even when the praise was untrue, so genuine appreciation needs no embellishment.

How to build it

Email and SMS
On the anniversary of sign-up, send a short note with the customer's own milestones and no offer; hold out a random 10% to measure.
B2B
Have the account owner send a personal thank-you after go-live and at the first anniversary.
E-commerce
Include a handwritten-style thank-you card in first orders.

What can go wrong

  • An appreciation message with a coupon at the bottom.
  • Mass-produced notes that read as automated.
  • Messages so frequent that none feels special.

Pairs well with

  • Pairs with in-t-cc-31: appreciation comes before the renewal summary, not inside it.
  • Pairs with F08: design anniversaries as peaks.
