Ask for invites and ratings after the first major win

Ask users to invite, share or rate only after they have had a real win, and keep the default share text modest and editable. Asking right after sign-up delays their win and puts their friendships at risk.

Plain label: share ask at the moment of successAlso known as: invites after value, rating prompt timing

How it works

People share what they are proud of and recommend what has already worked for them (CD5 fueled by CD2). An invite wall before value asks users to spend social capital on something they cannot vouch for yet. Chou also notes that most apps add a sharing channel without creating anything worth sharing. Hard-sell default text makes users feel used, while a personal-sounding message gets sent.

How to build it

Mobile
Show the rating prompt after a completed workout or a personal best, never on first launch.
B2B
Offer 'invite your team' after the first report is shared successfully.
Web
A share card with modest, editable text after a course is completed.

What can go wrong

  • Invite walls at sign-up.
  • Hard-sell default text full of superlatives and discounts.
  • Asking at a moment when users feel nothing.

Pairs well with

  • Pair with GT#57 Brag Buttons for the share action.
  • Make the invite carry value to the recipient (GT#63).
