Brag Buttons (GT#57)
A prominent, explicit way to broadcast something the user is proud of, placed at Major Win-States and absent elsewhere. Most share buttons are ignored because they sit on every screen with nothing worth sharing behind them.
Plain label: share prompt at a real winAlso known as: Brag Buttons, share button
How it works
People want to show accomplishments to others (CD5 fueled by CD2), but only when the achievement is real and the audience can tell it was hard. Chou's example is a mobile runner game's one-tap share of a high-score screenshot, and he predicted that a sequel's dimmed button would get fewer shares. A share channel does not create anything worth sharing, so fix the moment before adding the button.
How to build it
- Mobile
- An auto-generated share card for 'first plan completed' or a personal record, shown prominently at the moment of the win.
- Web
- A course-completion certificate with a one-click share to a professional network.
- B2B
- A 'we shipped it' card after a project milestone, with modest, editable default text.
What can go wrong
- Share buttons on every screen.
- Auto-posting without an explicit user action.
- Hard-sell default text full of superlatives and discounts.
Pairs well with
- Ask after the First Major Win-State, never at sign-up.
- Use editable, personal-sounding default text.
