Real waitlists with real positions

Restrict early access and open it in stages, with a real position, a real reason for the limit and genuine ways to move up, so each early step feels like qualifying. Plan what replaces exclusivity once you open up, because scarcity drives bursts, not retention.

Plain label: honest staged accessAlso known as: waitlist, staged rollout, invite-only beta

How it works

Restricted access signals value and builds pent-up demand (CD6), and scarcity works only if people know the reward exists. Chou's example is Facebook's rollout from one university to everyone, where early exclusivity later turned into group pride (Elitism, CD1). He adds that a mature product that already engages does not need added scarcity, and fake queues destroy the signal.

How to build it

Web
A waitlist page that shows the real position and two honest ways to move up, such as completing a profile or inviting a colleague who joins.
B2B
Cohort-based onboarding with stated capacity limits.
Mobile
A region-by-region rollout announced with dates.

What can go wrong

  • Positions that never move or are invented.
  • No plan for when exclusivity ends.
  • Excluding groups in ways that breed resentment.

Pairs well with

  • Turn early cohorts into a proud group identity (GT#26).
  • Replace scarcity with other drives once access is open.
