Real waitlist with real positions
Before launch, or while capacity is truly limited, run a waitlist that shows each person's real position and the real count, and let members share invites. Visible demand is social proof; a line kept long on purpose with room inside is a fake cue that people eventually see through.
Plain label: honest waitlistAlso known as: waitlist, visible demand, invite-only beta, queue position
How it works
A line signals that others want in, which reads as evidence of value to people who cannot judge the product yet. A real waitlist also gives early users something to share and a reason to come back when their turn arrives. The cue holds only while it is real: lines kept artificially long and invented positions are the counterfeit version the book describes, and buyers learn to discount them.
In the book. A long line outside a club is proof of popularity, which is why some clubs kept one going with room inside (Ch.4, p.90). INF-T-SP-06 (Influence Ch.4, p.90)
In a product [S]. A waitlist with real positions, a real count and a real reason for the wait.
Evidence Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.. The mechanism is social proof under uncertainty; waitlist results are mostly anecdotal.
Evidence warning
The book offers only examples of the faked version; controlled evidence on waitlist conversion is thin.
What the research says
Nightclubs kept lines outside while there was room inside, using the queue as proof of popularity; the book treats it as a counterfeit cue.

Before you start
- Real capacity limits (onboarding slots, inventory, beta seats) that the list reflects
How to build it
- Web
- Show "You are #412 of 3,980" with the actual count, an estimated date based on the real onboarding pace, and a share link that moves the member up for each friend who joins.
- Mobile
- Gate the beta by real capacity, send an invite when a seat opens, and let members gift a limited number of invites.
What can go wrong
- Positions or counts that do not change with reality.
- A waitlist with no cap, kept only for show.
- Long waits with no updates, which cool interest.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with in-t-lk-02: invites from waitlisted friends carry the inviter's name.
- Pairs with in-t-sc-01 when capacity is the real limit.
