Notifications typed by Core Drive (OCT-M27)

For every notification or feedback element, name the drive it carries and the Desired Action it leads to, and retire signals that carry neither. Track click-through and mute rates by drive, since too many loss, scarcity or chance triggers cause fatigue.

Plain label: every notification names its motivation and next actionAlso known as: trigger typing, Feedback Mechanics as triggers

How it works

Chou treats Feedback Mechanics as triggers: points carry accomplishment, countdowns scarcity, a spinning wheel curiosity, a friend's like social influence. A trigger with no drive behind it is an empty signal, and a feedback element that only reports without prompting a next action wastes the moment. Listing every medium (screens, email, push, community, events) before choosing mechanics keeps the set coherent.

How to build it

Mobile
Tag each push with its drive (progress, social, curiosity, deadline) and its target action, and drop any with neither.
Email and SMS
Lifecycle emails that each end in one action tied to the user's goal.
B2B
In-app feedback cards (progress, team activity) that link straight to the next step.

What can go wrong

  • Notifications with no clear action.
  • Over-reliance on loss and urgency triggers.
  • Feedback that reports without prompting anything.

Pairs well with

  • Ask for notification permission after first value (HK-TRG11).
  • Watch mute rates by drive as a guardrail.
