Layered trigger cascade with fallbacks
Stack owned triggers so one missed cue doesn't end the habit: a reminder tied to the user's own plan, a quiet badge if it is missed, an easier option if day one never starts, a channel the user picked, a no-guilt note after a lapse, and encouragement from people they know.
Plain label: reminder sequence with backupsAlso known as: trigger cascade, Bible app cascade, badge fallback, day-1 failure branch, easier plan, community encouragement
How it works
Any single reminder often fails: it arrives at a bad moment, gets dismissed or is muted. A sequence of different, gentler cues gives the user several chances to act, and the day-one branch catches people whose first goal was too big. The book's example is a scripture-reading app.
Evidence warning
The cascade comes from one company's account; as a whole it has not been tested against simpler reminder plans.
What the research says
The reading app that used this cascade reported more than 100 million installs by July 2013 (company-reported).
Hooked Ch.7 (YouVersion), 2013
Before you start
- The value event is tracked.
How to build it
- Mobile
- Primary push at the user's chosen time; a badge only while today's unit is pending; an easier-plan offer 24-48 hours after a missed first day.
- Email and SMS
- An optional daily email for users who prefer it; after a few missed days, one note offering to resume or shorten the plan.
- B2B
- A chat reminder before the team's weekly ritual; if missed, a summary to the owner; if a new account never starts, a lighter template.
What can go wrong
- Every step fires for every user, which turns into spam.
- Badges for things that aren't pending.
- Guilt copy in the lapse note.
Pairs well with
- Ask for permission after value so the first step exists.
- End the sequence with guilt-free lapse recovery.
