Ask for permission right after the first value
Ask for push, email or an install at the moment the user has just received something worth hearing about again, and say what they will get and how often. Never ask on the first screen.
Plain label: permission after valueAlso known as: push permission timing, pre-permission prompt, notification opt-in, email opt-in, owned trigger
How it works
Owned triggers need the user's permission, and people grant it most readily right after they have seen the value the messages will carry. An ask before any value has no reason behind it, so it gets declined, and a declined system prompt is hard to show again.
Before you start
- The value event is tracked.
How to build it
- Mobile
- Show a short in-app explainer right after the first result ('Want to know when your report is ready?') and fire the system prompt only on yes.
- Web
- Offer browser or email alerts tied to the item the user just saved.
- Email and SMS
- State frequency and content at sign-up and default to the lowest useful cadence.
- B2B
- Ask to connect chat notifications after the first report is generated, not at workspace creation.
What can go wrong
- System prompt on first launch.
- Pre-ticked consent boxes.
- Asking again right after a no.
Pairs well with
- Follow with an event-based cadence that tapers.
- Catch users who never reach value with an easier day-one option.
