No asks at frustrating moments

Keep upgrade prompts, promotions and the brand mascot off error screens, failed payments, outages and the middle of a task, and cap notification frequency. Feelings attach to whatever is present at the moment, so an ask made during frustration inherits the frustration.

Plain label: keep promos off error and wait screensAlso known as: bad-news association, upgrade modal mid-task, notification fatigue, blame the messenger

How it works

People link whatever accompanies an experience to the feeling it produced, which is why messengers of bad news are disliked even when blameless. Contact under frustration or competition lowers liking rather than raising it. Moving asks away from unpleasant moments, and toward pleasant ones, changes the feeling attached to the product at almost no cost.

In the book. Feelings transfer by association, so the bearer of bad news gets the blame (Ch.5, pp.142-147), and contact during competition or frustration lowers liking (Ch.5, pp.133-137). INF-T-LK-13 (Influence Ch.5, p.134) INF-T-LK-24 (Influence Ch.5, p.142)

What the research says

  • Television weather forecasters received hate mail, and even threats, over bad weather they only reported.

    Influence Ch.5, pp.142-144

  • Plain contact between rival groups under competition increased hostility; liking rose only with cooperation toward shared goals.

How to build it

Web
Suppress upgrade modals on error, empty-result and payment-failure screens and while a task is in progress; show them after a completed action instead.
Mobile
Cap promotional notifications per week, and never send one within an hour of a crash or a failed action.
Email and SMS
Send billing failures from a plain, helpful sender with the fix, separate from marketing.

What can go wrong

  • Paywalls that interrupt a task halfway through.
  • Cheerful branding on failure screens.

Pairs well with

  • The mirror image of in-t-lk-21: move asks from bad moments to good ones.
  • Pairs with in-t-fn-01: when an ask must appear at a limit, give the real reason.
