Plain label: fewer, clearer choicesAlso known as: Hick-Hyman law, cognitive load, choice overload, jam study, plan count

Core idea. Hick-Hyman: decision time grows roughly with the logarithm of the number of equally likely options, so making the likely option prominent helps even without removing others Evidence grade A. Robust evidence: replicated, peer-reviewed research.. Cognitive load theory: cut the extra load that comes from presentation Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. F13 (Choice overload: a conceptual review and meta-analysis, Chernev, Bockenholt & Goodman, Journal of Consumer Psychology, 2015)

Choice overload. A 2010 meta-analysis of 50 experiments found a mean effect near zero with large variance; a 2015 meta-analysis found real effects once four moderators are present: complex option sets, hard decision tasks, unclear preferences and a goal of deciding quickly Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies..

How it plugs in. One dominant action per key screen; progressive disclosure; a recommended option with a stated reason; pricing pages with 2-4 plans and one highlighted. Keep breadth for experts with clear preferences and good filters.
