Feedback interventions and gamification meta-analyses
Feedback helps performance on average (d about 0.41), but over a third of feedback interventions made performance worse, mostly when feedback shifts attention from the task to the self. Game layers in learning show moderate gains (g about 0.25-0.49). Prefer task-focused feedback and near-peer comparisons. Feedback A; gamification B.
Plain label: what feedback and game layers really doAlso known as: Kluger and DeNisi, feedback intervention theory, gamification meta-analysis, near-peer comparison
Feedback. A pooled analysis of 607 effect sizes found d about 0.41 on average, yet more than a third of interventions lowered performance, whether the feedback was positive or negative Evidence grade A. Robust evidence: replicated, peer-reviewed research.. Feedback works when it keeps attention on how to do the task better. F23 (Effects of feedback interventions on performance, Kluger & DeNisi, Psychological Bulletin, 1996)
Gamification. In learning contexts: cognitive g = 0.49, motivational g = 0.36, behavioral g = 0.25, with the motivational and behavioral effects less stable Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. Effects depend strongly on context and users.
How it plugs in. Near-peer leagues with task-focused feedback instead of global leaderboards (GT#3 (Actionable Gamification Ch.6, p.119)); personal-best comparisons for novices; modest expectations for any game layer, paired with real utility.
