Stage investment asks from easy to hard
Ask for one small investment per cycle and raise the size only after earlier ones are done. If many users skip an ask, it is too big for where they are: split it or move it later, and say when its payoff arrives.
Plain label: progressive asksAlso known as: progressive profiling, staged asks, ask size, deferred payoff
How it works
Each investment has to fit the user's motivation and ability at that moment. Small early asks succeed and make the next one feel consistent, and explaining when a later payoff arrives keeps users willing to do work whose benefit comes afterward.
How to build it
- Web
- One profile field per session instead of a ten-field form.
- B2B
- Connect one data source in week 1, invite teammates in week 2, set up automations in month 2.
- Mobile
- 'Follow five creators and tomorrow's feed gets better': say when the payoff arrives.
What can go wrong
- Front-loading every setup task.
- Asking for the hardest investment at the first success.
Pairs well with
- Ask right after the reward.
- A commitment ladder that starts with a tiny yes.
