Ask for contributions after users benefit

New users do not want to contribute data, reviews or content yet; they start once they have repeatedly benefited from what others contributed. Time the first contribution ask after several successful sessions, keep it to a tap and thank contributors right away.

How it works

Contributing is a creative and social act (CD3, CD5) that feels worth doing once users know what it gives others, because they have received it themselves. Chou's audit of a navigation app found new users were not ready to report until other people's reports had helped them. Low-friction contribution with large tap targets and instant appreciation then keeps it going.

How to build it

Web
The first review prompt appears after a user's third successful order, as a one-tap rating.
Mobile
'Was this accurate? Yes / No' after users relied on community data.
B2B
Ask for a template or an answer once the user has used several from others.

What can go wrong

  • Contribution asks in the first session.
  • Effortful forms where a tap would do.
  • No thanks or visible impact after contributing.

Pairs well with

  • Show contributors their impact, such as how many people found an answer helpful.
  • Mirrors the investment-after-reward rule in Hooked (HK-INV01).
