Lead with the core value
Before adding any influence lever, make the concrete outcome obvious: time saved, money saved, the result the user gets. The six principles amplify real value; none of them replaces it.
Plain label: value-first messageAlso known as: material self-interest, value proposition first, outcome-first copy
How it works
Cialdini treats people's wish to get the most for the least as the baseline motive behind every decision, not as a principle of its own. Cues such as proof, scarcity or authority tip a decision only when the offer is already worth having; on a weak offer they lift the first yes and then show up as churn and refunds. Stating the outcome first also gives every later cue something true to attach to.
In the book. The Introduction treats the wish to get the most for the least as a given, then catalogs the shortcuts that work on top of it (Introduction, p.vii). INF-T-FN-15 (Influence Intro)
In a product [S]. State the concrete outcome first, and add proof, authority or scarcity only where they describe something true about that outcome.
Evidence Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.. Message-clarity testing is common practice; the book itself offers no study here.
What the research says
The book sets the wish to get the most for the least aside as a given motive that every compliance tactic works on top of, rather than counting it as a principle.
Influence, Introduction, p.vii
How to build it
- Web
- Put the outcome in the headline with a number the user can check ("Close your books in 2 days, not 10"), before any logos, counts or badges.
- B2B
- Open the pricing page or deck with an ROI calculator that shows its assumptions and lets the buyer edit them.
- E-commerce
- Lead product pages with what the product does for the buyer and how it compares, then the reviews and badges.
What can go wrong
- Stacking proof, urgency and badges over an unclear offer.
- Outcome claims the product cannot deliver for most users.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with in-t-sp-12: proof follows the value statement, at the point of doubt.
- Comes before any pricing lever; when no segment retains, work on the Value stage first.
