Personalized gift with the appeal
When reaching people who have not asked to hear from you (lapsed users, cold prospects), include something personal and useful right away: credits for the task they left unfinished, a personalized year in review, a benchmark built from their data. A small personal gift raises response more than the appeal alone.
Plain label: personal gift in a win-backAlso known as: personalized gift, unsolicited gift, win-back gift, personal benchmark
How it works
Gifts create a sense of obligation even when nobody asked for them, and a gift that is personalized and fits the person's situation is harder to set aside than a generic one. In win-back and cold outreach the relationship is weak, so the gift does work that liking cannot. Too many gift-plus-appeal messages, though, teach people to discard them unopened.
In the book. Personalized address labels nearly doubled response to a mail appeal (Ch.2, p.22), and the obligation to receive means a gift can create a debt nobody asked for (Ch.2, pp.22-23). INF-T-RC-06 (Influence Ch.2, p.22)
In a product [S]. In win-back and cold outreach, lead with something personal and usable now.
Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. Field experiments find that gifts raise giving, with larger gifts doing more.
Evidence warning
Book figures come from single campaigns; test the gift against a no-gift holdout.
Frequent gift-plus-ask messages build fatigue; cap the cadence.
What the research says
A veterans' charity that added personalized address labels to its mail appeal saw response rise from about 18% to 35% (one campaign).
Influence Ch.2, p.22
In a field experiment with about 10,000 solicitation letters, a small gift raised the share of people donating by about 17% and a larger gift by about 75%.

Before you start
- Enough user data to personalize the gift (past activity, unfinished work, usage totals)
How to build it
- Email and SMS
- For lapsed users, send credits or a finished draft of the work they left, with the one action that resumes it; compare with a plain "we miss you" message.
- B2B
- Open cold or win-back outreach with a short benchmark built from the account's own data, then make the ask.
- Mobile
- Show returning users a personal recap of what they had built and one unlocked item to get started again.
What can go wrong
- Generic gifts that could go to anyone.
- Guilt framing ("after everything we sent you").
- A gift that requires an account action before it can be used.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with HK-TRG33 and a fresh-start frame for lapsed users.
- Pairs with in-t-rc-01: the gift should still be useful if the user does not come back.
Limits
What we don’t claim
- Left Brain and Right Brain are a metaphor for extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, not a claim about neuroscience.Actionable Gamification Ch.13, pp.342-343
