Brief open-access window

Open a normally restricted part of the product for a short, stated period (a free premium weekend, an open week for paywalled content, a public tour of a members-only community) and enforce the end. The window draws lapsed and new users in; interest that exists only because the window is closing soon fades, so pair it with real value.

Plain label: free premium weekend with a stated endAlso known as: open-access window, free weekend, limited preview, open house

How it works

Access that is available only briefly gains appeal from the limit itself: the author felt a sudden urge to tour a temple open to visitors for a few days, and the urge vanished once he admitted the closing window was his only reason. A product window works when people find real value during it; when the deadline is the only reason, conversions from the window churn quickly.

In the book. A temple open to visitors for a few days drew the author's interest until he named the closing window as his only reason (Ch.7, pp.178-179). INF-T-SC-24 (Influence Ch.7, p.178)

In a product [S]. Short, real, enforced open windows, paired with something worth trying.

Evidence Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.. One anecdote plus general scarcity research; measure retention, not only reactivation.

How to build it

Email and SMS
Invite lapsed users to a free premium weekend with the start and end dates and one suggested thing to try.
Web
Open paywalled content for a launch week with the closing date on every page, then restore the paywall on schedule.
Mobile
Unlock a premium mode for 48 hours for returning users, with a summary of what they used when it ends.

What can go wrong

  • Extending the window again and again.
  • No guidance on what to try during the window.
  • Judging success on reactivations without retention.

Pairs well with

  • Pairs with in-t-rc-06: a personal gift for lapsed users.
  • Pairs with in-t-sc-13: the end is stated up front.
