Longest term first

When offering plan terms or a protection plan, present the longest term first and the shorter ones after it. The shorter term then looks small by contrast and reads as a step down. The book's only evidence is one salesperson's report, so treat it as a heuristic to test.

Plain label: longest billing term shown firstAlso known as: longest-term-first pitch, term picker order, service-contract pitch, annual first

How it works

A salesperson who pitched the three-year service contract before the one-year contract sold far more contracts than colleagues, and his customers seemed satisfied. Contrast makes the second option look modest, and the step down feels like a concession. Extending this from add-on contracts to billing terms is our inference, and it only works when the longer term is genuinely good value.

In the book. A reader's report: pitching the longest service contract first raised the attach rate, with satisfied customers (Ch.2, pp.41-42). INF-T-RC-22 (Influence Ch.2, p.41)

In a product [S]. Show the longest billing or protection term first. Applying the pitch to billing terms is our extension.

What the research says

  • One salesperson reported that about 70% of his customers added a service contract when he pitched the three-year plan first, against about 40% for colleagues who led with the one-year plan.

Before you start

  • At least one segment already has product-market fit.

How to build it

Web
In the billing-term picker, list 24 months, then 12, then monthly, with the per-month price and the total for each.
E-commerce
Offer protection plans longest first with what each covers, and keep "No plan" as easy to choose as any option.
B2B
Quote the multi-year term first with its real discount, then the annual and monthly options.

What can go wrong

  • A long term with no real saving.
  • Making the monthly option hard to find.

Pairs well with

  • Pairs with in-t-fn-04: show the real saving for each term.
  • Pairs with in-t-rc-16: if the long term is declined, offer one shorter option.
