Metric
Current-user retention rate (CURR)
Share of yesterday's current users (active that day and in the prior week) who are active again today. In Duolingo's growth model, lifting this rate moved daily actives more than any other transition.
Plain label: share of current users who stay activeAlso known as: CURR, current user retention
Duolingo classifies every user daily as new, current, reactivated, resurrected, at-risk or dormant. Simulating a 2% monthly lift in each transition showed CURR had the largest effect on daily actives; a dedicated team then moved it with tests, and daily actives grew about 4x from 2019 to early 2023 (company-reported; benchmark confidence A). At Mature, protecting current users comes before acquisition spend.
