Raise challenge as skill grows: the flow ladder (OCT-M22)
Place the core activities on Chou's flow ladder for each phase, find where users are anxious (repeated failures, rage clicks, help visits) and where veterans are bored (shrinking sessions), and raise depth and challenge as skill grows. An experience that never changes drifts into boredom.
Plain label: difficulty that keeps pace with skillAlso known as: flow ladder, adaptive difficulty
How it works
Challenge has to keep pace with skill to hold people in flow. Chou maps the drives onto that range, from anxious loss avoidance at the too-hard end, through accomplishment and creativity at the heart of flow, to collecting, socializing and chance at the relaxed end. Because skill grows, an experience that stays the same across phases slides toward boredom for veterans. The ladder is Chou's mapping; the flow concept itself comes from Csikszentmihalyi.
How to build it
- Web
- Offer a harder variant after several easy successes and an easier one after repeated failure.
- B2B
- Surface advanced features and automations as users master the basics, with expert shortcuts for veterans.
- Mobile
- Challenge levels that step up with the user's measured performance rather than a fixed calendar.
What can go wrong
- One difficulty level for everyone.
- Raising difficulty mainly to sell help.
- Ignoring early anxiety signals because veterans look fine.
Pairs well with
- Unlock depth with progressive disclosure (GT#37).
- Give veterans creative tools so they set their own challenges.
