Metric roles: decision metric, guardrails and revenue quality
One decision metric that moves inside the window and predicts long-term value; guardrails read against a non-inferiority margin; deterioration and quality checks. A breached guardrail means not shipped. Revenue tests pre-register at least two revenue-quality guardrails, and a guardrail that needs 30 days can't pass on day 21.
Plain label: success metrics and counter-metricsAlso known as: OEC, guardrail metrics, non-inferiority, counter-metrics, revenue quality
Roles. Success metrics (ship only if one is significantly better), guardrails (shown not worse than a pre-set margin), deterioration metrics (nothing significantly worse) and quality metrics (validity checks such as the sample ratio). Correct false positives across success metrics and power for the number of guardrails Evidence grade A. Robust evidence: replicated, peer-reviewed research..
Classic lessons. Charging each email unsubscribe its lost future value turned many "winning" campaigns negative; LinkedIn cut email volume substantially with no significant loss of engagement Evidence grade A. Robust evidence: replicated, peer-reviewed research..
Revenue quality. Refunds, chargebacks, 30-day cancels, 60-day downgrades, discount dependence and the first-seen vs final price gap. INF-K-03 (Influence Ch.3, p.76) A lift that breaches one is a failed test.
Immature and small-sample guardrails. An immature guardrail means ship-provisional with a holdback. When a guardrail isn't powered, require no significant harm at one-sided alpha 0.10 and a point estimate inside the margin, labeled "guardrail not powered".
