Accurate logos, press and awards

Use prestige signals only when they are accurate and checkable: customer logos used with permission, press mentions linked to the article, awards with the issuer and year. Trappings earn deference quickly, which is exactly why buyers discount them once one turns out to be borrowed.

How it works

Ornamental signs of status (an expensive car, fine clothes) earn deference on sight: drivers waited longer before honking at a stalled luxury car. In products, logos, press mentions and awards play the same role, and far fewer people check them than are influenced by them. A logo that implies an endorsement that does not exist, or "as seen in" for a paid placement, borrows trust that collapses when a buyer checks.

In the book. Trappings such as expensive cars and clothes earn deference, and people do not predict it (Ch.6, pp.171-172). INF-T-AU-05 (Influence Ch.6, p.171)

In a product [S]. Logos, press mentions and awards that are current, permitted and linked.

Evidence Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.. Status cues work in field studies; logo-strip effects in products vary and are mostly internal.

What the research says

  • In a field study, about half the drivers stuck behind a stalled luxury car waited without honking, while nearly all honked at an economy car.
