Admit a minor, real limitation
State a real, minor drawback next to your strengths ("We cost more than basic tools, and here is why", "Import runs slower because we keep every version", a "Who this is not for" section). Admitting a small weakness makes the main claims more believable.
Plain label: say what the product is not good forAlso known as: two-sided message, admitted flaw, who this is not for, honest limitations
How it works
Credibility combines expertise and trustworthiness, and arguing against one's own interest is a strong signal of trustworthiness. Ads that admitted a small drawback (a medicinal taste, a second-place rank, a high price) gained credibility for their main claims. The admission must be real and minor and should be answered by a strength; a staged flaw that hides a major one is the counterfeit version.
In the book. Seeming to argue against one's own interest buys trust, and admitted minor flaws made main claims more credible (Ch.6, p.174). INF-T-AU-07 (Influence Ch.6, p.174)
In a product [S]. One real limitation, stated and answered, near the decision.
Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. In meta-analysis, two-sided messages that answer the drawback outperform one-sided ones.
Evidence warning
State the limitation together with its answer; in the research, an unanswered drawback lowers persuasion.
What the research says
The book cites campaigns that admitted a minor drawback (second place in the market, a medicinal taste, a premium price) and gained credibility for their main claims.
Influence Ch.6, p.174
A meta-analysis found that two-sided messages that acknowledge and then answer opposing points are more persuasive than one-sided messages, while two-sided messages that leave the drawback unanswered are less persuasive.

How to build it
- Web
- Add a "Who this is not for" block to the pricing page that names one segment better served elsewhere, and why.
- B2B
- In the proposal, name one area where a competitor is stronger and explain why it matters less for this buyer.
- E-commerce
- On the product page, state the real trade-off ("heavier than most, because of the steel frame").
- Web
- In the cancel or downgrade flow, confirm the reason the user picked when it is a real limitation ("Yes, bulk export is slow on this plan"), then offer the fix or the cheaper plan.
By product type
- B2B sales-led
- In season from M2 in proposals and sales calls.
What can go wrong
- A fake flaw ("we care too much").
- Hiding a major problem behind a minor one.
- Leaving the drawback unanswered.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with in-t-au-01: credentials plus candor.
- Pairs with in-t-au-08: the honest downsell sends the same signal at the plan step.
