Foot-in-the-door ladder with the endpoint visible
Begin with a first step nearly everyone accepts (a free calculator, saving a result), then offer larger related steps: a profile, a first project, inviting a teammate, a trial, a plan. Each rung should deliver value on its own, stopping should cost nothing, and the endpoint (price, renewal, data) should be visible from the first rung.
Plain label: small first step, larger steps laterAlso known as: foot-in-the-door, commitment ladder, progressive profiling, start small and build
How it works
Agreeing to a small request changes how people see themselves ("I am someone who supports this"), and that self-image carries over to larger related requests. The best first step is one almost everyone accepts and that implies an identity. Ladders that hide where they end lead people to places they would have refused if shown at the start, and those users leave when they find out.
In the book. Small first requests raised later compliance with much larger ones through a change in how people saw themselves (Ch.3, pp.53-57). INF-T-CC-05 (Influence Ch.3, p.53)
In a product [S]. Our commitment ladder: a first rung nearly everyone accepts, value at every rung, and the endpoint visible from the first rung. Score each rung with the Commitment Quality Score (in-commitment-quality-score).
Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. Reliable in meta-analyses, with modest average effects.
Evidence warning
Meta-analytic effects are much smaller than the 17% to 76% headline; test locally.
What the research says
In the original study, 17% of homeowners agreed to a large yard sign when asked cold; 76% agreed two weeks after accepting a small related request, and about half after an unrelated one.
Influence Ch.3, pp.55-56 (Freedman & Fraser), 1966
A review of the research found the effect reliable but modest on average, and strongest when the first act is actually performed and seen as freely chosen.

Before you start
- The value event is tracked.
How to build it
- Web
- Free calculator, then "save your results" (email), then a one-field profile, then a first project, then an invite, then a trial; show a step map with the price of the last step from the start.
- B2B
- Start with a small paid pilot or a single-seat plan that solves one problem, then propose the team rollout with the same success criteria.
- Email and SMS
- Ask for one preference per message (progressive profiling) and visibly use each answer in the next message.
What can go wrong
- A first rung that asks for too much (a card, a long form).
- Rungs with no standalone value, so stopping feels like losing.
- An endpoint that appears only at the last step.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with in-t-cc-34: show the endpoint at the first rung.
- Pairs with HK-INV04: small investments first.
