Opt-in public or chosen-audience commitment
Let users choose to share a goal with one to five people they pick, a coach or their team, with optional progress updates. Commitments seen by others are harder to drop; keep sharing optional, scoped and reversible, and never public by default.
Plain label: share your goal with people you pickAlso known as: public commitment, accountability partner, promise card, share your goal
How it works
A stance that many people have witnessed is harder to walk back, because consistency is now judged from outside as well as inside. A chosen audience adds that outside pressure without exposing the user broadly. For identity goals, though, announcing an intention can feel like progress in itself and reduce effort, so test sharing against private goals.
In the book. Public positions were the most stubborn in a classic study, and a chosen audience of respected people helped one woman keep her promise (Ch.3, pp.62-64). INF-T-CC-12 (Influence Ch.3, p.62) INF-T-CC-13 (Influence Ch.3, p.64)
In a product [S]. Opt-in, scoped sharing with people the user picks.
Evidence Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.. Mixed: public commitment helps some behaviors and can reduce effort on identity goals.
Evidence warning
Public announcement can backfire for identity goals; compare shared and private versions before rolling out.
Default-public goals or failures cause embarrassment and churn; sharing must be opt-in.
What the research says
A woman who mailed signed promise cards to people she respected used them to quit smoking for good (single anecdote).
Influence Ch.3, p.64
In one set of studies, people who announced identity-related intentions put in less effort afterward than people who kept them private.

How to build it
- Mobile
- After a user writes a goal, offer "Share with someone who will cheer you on" (pick 1-5 contacts or a coach), with progress updates the user can switch off.
- B2B
- Let teams publish quarterly goals to the workspace, with each owner choosing whether progress is visible.
- Email and SMS
- Send the chosen supporter one note when the user starts and one when they finish; never message contacts without the user's action.
What can go wrong
- Goals or failures shared by default.
- Using the feature to message contacts for growth.
- Sensitive goals (health, money) shared with too wide an audience.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with in-t-cc-09: the shared goal is the one the user wrote.
- Pairs with in-t-lk-27 for team and community goals.
