Endpoint first: full price and terms at step one
Show what the user is signing up for before the first step: the total price with mandatory fees, the renewal terms, the time involved and the data requested. The first price shown should be the final price. This removes the lowball gap and the refunds that come with it.
Plain label: all-in price shown firstAlso known as: endpoint-first, all-in pricing, total price display, no surprise fees, what you are signing up for
How it works
Saying no is easiest before the first step; every step after it adds commitment and new reasons to continue, so terms revealed late are accepted under pressure and regretted afterward. Showing the endpoint first moves the decision to the moment it can be made freely. It can lower early clicks somewhat, but buyers who go ahead know the price, which protects net revenue.
In the book. Refusing is easiest before anything has been agreed; each later step adds commitment, which is what the lowball exploits (Ch.3, pp.43, 53-57, 75-76). INF-T-CC-34 (Influence Ch.3, p.43)
In a product [S]. The first price display shows the final price, and the first step shows the endpoint. In 2025 a large home-rental marketplace moved to total prices by default worldwide (CASE-M04).
Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. Field evidence shows late fees raise gross sales; all-in pricing gives up part of that gain for prices buyers can trust. Measure refunds and complaints to see the net.
Evidence warning
Expect gross checkout conversion to dip where fees used to appear late; judge the change on net revenue after refunds and chargebacks.
What the research says
The book observes that refusing is easiest before anything has been agreed, and its lowball examples work by revealing the real terms late.
Influence Ch.3, pp.43, 75-76
In a large ticket-marketplace experiment, all-in prices shown from the start led to fewer purchases and lower spending than fees added at checkout: the gross gain that late fees capture, and that this technique gives up.

How to build it
- E-commerce
- Include mandatory fees and a shipping estimate in the first price on product and listing pages, so the checkout total matches it.
- Web
- Above the first sign-up button, show a short "What you are signing up for": the price after any trial, the renewal date and how to cancel.
- B2B
- Put the full annual cost (seats, platform fee, onboarding) on the first quote, with optional items listed separately.
- Mobile
- On the subscription screen, state the price per period, the trial end date and the renewal terms above the subscribe button.
By product type
- E-commerce / DTC
- Purchase is the value event: all-in prices from the first product view are a lead lever from M1.
What can go wrong
- "From $X" prices that few buyers actually pay.
- Taxes or fees left ambiguous where they are mandatory.
Pairs well with
- Replaces in-t-cc-27 (lowball and drip pricing).
- Pairs with in-t-cc-05: the ladder's endpoint is visible from the first rung.
- Pairs with in-t-sc-13 for trials.

In an experiment with 8,906 Airbnb users, high reputation significantly increased trust between dissimilar users, offsetting the pull toward similar others; analyses of about 1M real Airbnb interactions agreed (Abrahao et al., PNAS, Sept 2017).
