Level-matched peers for newcomers
Show beginners what other beginners did, not only polished expert work: "Learners in week 1 completed 3 lessons", galleries of first projects, a buddy one step ahead in the same segment. A peer at your own level makes the first action feel doable.
Plain label: beginners see beginnersAlso known as: peer modeling, buddy system, cohort onboarding, made in my first week
How it works
Watching someone similar do something new or frightening without harm changes what people believe they can do, and models close in age or skill work better than experts. Several varied models beat a single hero. In onboarding, expert showcases can intimidate, while peers one step ahead show a path the newcomer can follow.
In the book. Modeling changes behavior, especially with similar models and several of them (Ch.4, pp.90-91; Ch.4, pp.108-109). INF-T-SP-19 (Influence Ch.4, p.108) INF-T-SP-08 (Influence Ch.4, p.90)

Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. Peer-modeling research is broad; onboarding results are mostly internal.
What the research says
Children afraid of dogs who watched a peer play happily with a dog for 20 minutes a day became willing to approach one; 67% climbed into a playpen with a dog after four days.
Influence Ch.4, pp.90-91 (Bandura)
A young boy who had refused to swim for months jumped in after watching a slightly younger child do it; the author notes that arranging a swim date with a peer would have been the simplest fix.

How to build it
- Mobile
- In empty states, show a gallery of first-week projects from users with the same goal, labeled "made in week 1".
- Web
- Pair new members with a volunteer one step ahead in the same segment, with a suggested first message.
- B2B
- Offer a short call with a customer in the same industry who onboarded recently.
What can go wrong
- Showing only expert work, which raises the bar.
- Peer examples that are staged.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with in-t-sp-17, its prospect-facing version.
- Pairs with HK-INV19: a first win in session one.
