Honest downsell

When a cheaper plan fits the user's real usage, say so: a plan picker that sometimes recommends Starter, a "you may be overpaying" alert, a downgrade offered in the cancel flow. It costs some revenue now and buys credibility for later recommendations, which are then accepted more often.

Plain label: recommend the cheaper plan that fitsAlso known as: downsell, right-size recommendation, you may be overpaying, cheaper option that fits

How it works

Advice that runs against the adviser's own interest signals trustworthiness, and that trust carries over to the next recommendation. A waiter who warned diners off a dish and steered them to a slightly cheaper one then had his wine and dessert suggestions accepted, and earned the biggest bills and tips. His warning was scripted; the durable version is a recommendation computed from real usage, so later upgrade prompts stay honest too.

In the book. A waiter's "not good tonight" warning made his later suggestions trusted and lifted both the size of the bill and the tip (Ch.6, pp.174-176). INF-T-AU-08 (Influence Ch.6, p.175)

In a product [S]. A recommendation that sometimes points to the cheaper plan, based on real usage.

Evidence Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.. Advice against one's own interest raises credibility in lab work; the lifetime-value effect needs local testing.

What the research says

  • A waiter the author worked beside steered diners to slightly cheaper dishes, then had his wine and dessert suggestions accepted, and earned the highest bills and tips (participant observation; his warning was staged).

    Influence Ch.6, pp.174-176

  • In a classic experiment, communicators who argued against their own interest were more persuasive than those who argued for it.

How to build it

Web
In the plan picker, recommend Free or Starter when the answers fit it ("For two people, Starter covers everything you listed") and say when Team would make sense.
B2B
Run a usage review before renewal and propose fewer seats when seats sit unused.
Mobile
In the cancel flow, offer the cheaper plan that covers what the user actually used, with one tap to switch.

What can go wrong

  • A downsell that sets up a bigger upsell later.
  • Recommending cheaper plans that do not fit, which creates support load.
  • Later upgrade prompts that are not based on real limits.

Pairs well with

  • Pairs with in-t-fn-11: the recommendation is computed from fit.
  • Pairs with in-t-cc-31 at renewal.
  • Pairs with in-t-rc-23: the cheaper plan can be the single fallback.
