One visible concession after a decline

When someone declines an upgrade or starts to cancel, show one smaller, honest alternative that names the step back ("Rather than a year, try one month" or "Pause for eight weeks"), then let them go. One clear concession tends to be returned; a chain of them reads as a trap.

Plain label: single honest fallback offerAlso known as: downsell, save offer, fallback offer, concession framing

How it works

A concession that is visible and sincere invites a concession in return, and it leaves people feeling they shaped the outcome, which supports follow-through and satisfaction. The same mechanism turns against the product when concessions are scripted or stacked: people who recognize a tactical retreat feel no obligation, and long save flows raise complaints and regulatory risk.

In the book. A retreat works when it reads as a real concession, and people who accepted one felt they had set the terms (Ch.2, pp.28-29, 35-37). INF-T-RC-23 (Influence Ch.2, p.28)

In a product [S]. One honest fallback offer after a decline, worded as the step back it is. The 2025 US FTC settlement over a hard-to-cancel subscription shows the cost of the loop version (CASE-M06).

Evidence warning

What the research says

  • The book reports that people who accepted after a retreat felt more responsible for the deal, were more satisfied with it and were more willing to deal again.

How to build it

Web
In the cancel flow, show one card with a pause or a cheaper plan and a "Continue to cancel" button of equal weight; cancellation completes on the next click.
Mobile
After a declined upgrade, offer one alternative (a monthly plan or a smaller pack) and show no other upgrade prompt in that session.
B2B
At renewal, if the customer declines the proposal, offer one scoped option tied to a real trade-off (shorter term, fewer seats).

What can go wrong

  • Several offers in sequence before the cancel button works.
  • A fake "manager-approved" discount.
  • A fallback that is not actually cheaper or smaller.

Pairs well with

  • Pairs with in-t-rc-16: the retreat follows a real, larger offer.
  • Pairs with in-t-au-08 when the honest fallback is a cheaper plan.
