Re-choice moment at renewal
Before a renewal, send a summary of the value received and make changing or canceling easy: a usage recap, a right-size recommendation, a one-tap plan change. Retention that survives an honest re-choice is retention you can build on.
Plain label: renewal summary with an easy changeAlso known as: re-choice, re-choice question, renewal reminder, right-size check
How it works
People keep commitments partly out of consistency, and many of their reasons for staying were created by the original decision rather than by the product. The book's defense is a gut-level question: if I were deciding today, with what I now know, would I make the same choice? A product that invites that question at renewal, with real usage in view, keeps customers who still value it and learns early from those who do not.
In the book. For choices already rationalized, ask whether you would decide the same way today with what you now know, and trust your first feeling (Ch.3, pp.79-85). INF-T-CC-31 (Influence Ch.3, p.79)
In a product [S]. Build that question into renewal: a value recap, an easy change and an easy cancel.
Evidence Evidence grade C. Limited evidence: few or small studies.. The book offers a defense, not a test; read the change against net retention.
Evidence warning
Expect a short-term rise in cancellations from customers who no longer value the product; judge the change on 90-day net retention and the re-choice rate (INF-K-18).
What the research says
The book's defense against foolish consistency is a gut-level re-choice question asked before staying with an earlier decision.

Before you start
- The value event is tracked.
How to build it
- Email and SMS
- Two weeks before renewal, send the amount, the date, a recap of what the customer did with the product and one-tap links to keep, change or cancel.
- B2B
- Hold an annual right-size review with the admin: seats used, features used and the plan that fits, even when it is cheaper.
- Web
- At renewal, add one question to the account page ("If you were choosing today, would you pick us again?") and route "no" answers to support.
What can go wrong
- Hiding the cancel option in the renewal message.
- A recap padded with vanity numbers.
- Quoting the user's old goals to guilt them into staying.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with HK-INV27: make stored value visible.
- Pairs with in-t-au-08: recommend the cheaper plan when it fits.
