Left Brain vs Right Brain drives

Octalysis splits the octagon horizontally: left drives (CD2, CD4, CD6) lean extrinsic and goal-driven; right drives (CD3, CD5, CD7) lean intrinsic and process-driven. Chou says the labels are a metaphor, not neuroscience. His rule: lure with extrinsic rewards if needed, then move people toward right-brain motivation.

Plain label: extrinsic vs intrinsic tendencyAlso known as: Left Brain, Right Brain, extrinsic vs intrinsic

The axis

  • Left (extrinsic tendency): Accomplishment, Ownership, Scarcity. People act for the goal or the reward, even when the task itself is unpleasant.
  • Right (intrinsic tendency): Creativity, Social Influence, Curiosity. The activity is rewarding in itself.
  • On the vertical axis: Meaning (top) and Loss (bottom) have no side.

Chou is explicit that "left" and "right" are symbolic, not claims about brain anatomy; he jokes he could have used other names. Use dual-process language when scientific framing is needed. Octalysis also counts mastery as extrinsic because it is goal-driven, which differs from Self-Determination Theory in wording.

Rules Chou draws from it

  • Removal Test (OCT-M10): imagine removing the goal, the reward and all accumulated progress. Would people still do the action? Social play and creative puzzles pass; collecting and points usually fail.
  • Crowding out (OCT-M11): rewarding an activity people already enjoy can push out their own reason for doing it, and offering money flips social norms into market norms. See OCT-M11.
  • Lure, bridge, sustain (OCT-M12): attract with a concrete reward, bridge with recognition, status and access, then sustain with right-brain drives. See OCT-M12.
  • Never keep running the month-one reward campaign; it ends in staleness and burnout.

How Gamify It reads brain balance [Analyst]

Right present means at least one of CD3, CD5 or CD7 is rated Clear or above in the phase; left-only means only left drives reach Clear. A left-only Return or Stay loop is Chou's prediction of engagement that falls when rewards stop (grade Evidence grade D. Practitioner framework or anecdote: plausible, untested.). The overjustification research behind it is stronger but conditional: expected, tangible, contingent rewards undermine intrinsic motivation most, while unexpected rewards and informational praise do much less harm.
