Lure, bridge, sustain: from extrinsic to intrinsic (OCT-M12)
Use a concrete reward to attract people, bridge with recognition, status and access, then sustain with intrinsic drives such as creativity, connection and curiosity. Chou credits the ladder to Michael Wu and warns against running the month-one reward campaign forever.
Plain label: planned move from rewards to intrinsic valueAlso known as: extrinsic to intrinsic ladder, Left to Right
How it works
A tangible reward beats an abstract promise of fun for busy prospects (CD4), but relying on it brings overjustification, staleness and burnout. Recognition, status and access are intrinsic rewards that bridge the gap, and right-brain drives (CD3, CD5, CD7) keep people once rewards fade. Chou adds that a reward tiny relative to the effort is worse than none, so the lure must be sized not to insult.
How to build it
- Web
- Week 1: a sign-up credit; weeks 2-6: contributor status and early access; afterward: creation tools and community roles.
- B2B
- A launch incentive for the first integrations, followed by a partner directory listing and a builders' community.
- Mobile
- A first-week reward for completed workouts, then group challenges and personal-best tracking.
What can go wrong
- Keeping the month-one reward running indefinitely.
- Rewards so small they insult the effort.
- No right-brain follow-on planned, so engagement falls when rewards stop.
Pairs well with
- Plan the right-brain follow-on before launching any incentive.
- Check for crowding out first (OCT-M11).
