Make the return loop intrinsic: people, surprise, choice (OCT-M13)
When users come back only for points, streaks or rewards, add one of Chou's three intrinsic levers: collaboration built into the action, a little controlled unpredictability on short actions, or real choices with trade-offs. Adding an absent drive is cheaper than pushing a strong one higher.
Plain label: add a right-brain reason to come backAlso known as: three ways to make it intrinsic, right-brain drives
How it works
Left-brain loops run on rewards and stall when the rewards stop; right-brain drives (CD5, CD7, CD3) make the activity worth doing for itself. Chou's social lever starts by protecting the First Major Win-State and then builds collaboration into the action; the curiosity lever pairs small, varied surprises with gains rather than losses; the choice lever offers two or three options with real trade-offs. His framework expects these to outlast rewards, a prediction to test locally.
How to build it
- B2B
- Shared boards and assignments inside the core action, so coming back means working with teammates, not collecting points.
- Mobile
- Rotating success messages and an occasional surprise bonus on short actions, never a random penalty.
- Web
- Two or three ways to reach the weekly goal, each with a different trade-off, chosen by the user.
What can go wrong
- Random penalties instead of random gains.
- Social features that are only invite prompts.
- Choices that are cosmetic.
Pairs well with
- Check for crowding out before adding cash or points (OCT-M11).
- Watch activity after rewards stop with a post-removal holdout.
