IKEA effect
People value what they helped build, but only when the effort ends in success. It is the research base for investment and ownership design: let users make something early that they can actually finish. Replicated (B).
Plain label: effort raises value when it succeedsAlso known as: IKEA effect, effort justification, first creation
Core idea. Building raised valuation only when the build was completed; destroyed or unfinished creations lost the effect. F11 (The IKEA effect: when labor leads to love, Norton, Mochon & Ariely, Journal of Consumer Psychology, 2012)
Evidence. Four original studies plus an independent conceptual replication that pointed to psychological ownership as the mechanism Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits..
How it plugs in. A first creation in the first session (a playlist, board, schedule, workspace) that is achievable; templates the user adapts instead of a blank page; customization. Measure the share of new users who create at least one thing in week 1, and retention by how much they created.
Watch-outs. Over-demanding setup backfires: the labor must lead to visible success and come after the first reward. HK-INV01 (Hooked Ch.5)
