Specify the exact next action
Make every request concrete enough that nobody has to guess the next step: a concrete verb and outcome ("Connect your bank to receive your first payout"), a checklist, a pre-written referral or review message, one named owner. Vague requests leave people unsure whether and how to act, and unsure people wait.
Plain label: one concrete, specific requestAlso known as: specific call to action, single named owner, exact action, pre-written message
How it works
Bystanders often fail to help not from indifference but because they are unsure whether help is needed, what to do and whether it is their job; a clear, specific request to one person removes all three doubts. In a product, a vague prompt leaves the same doubts about the next step, while a concrete instruction with the effort already reduced turns intent into action.
In the book. Uncertainty, not apathy, keeps bystanders still, and a specific task given to one named person ends it (Ch.4, pp.101-106). INF-T-SP-15 (Influence Ch.4, p.105) INF-T-SP-14 (Influence Ch.4, p.101)
In a product [S]. Concrete verbs, outcomes and owners on every request, and pre-written messages for referrals and reviews.
Evidence Evidence grade B. Moderate evidence: solid studies with some limits.. The bystander findings are classic and replicated; product lifts from specific calls to action are smaller and vary.
What the research says
In a staged-seizure study, 85% of people who believed they were the only witness went to help, against 31% of those who believed four others were also listening.

The book's protocol for getting help: say plainly that help is needed, pick out one person and hand them a specific job; in clear emergencies, nearly everyone helped.

How to build it
- Web
- Replace "Get started" with the exact first action and its result ("Import your contacts to send your first campaign"), plus a three-step checklist.
- Email and SMS
- For referral and review asks, include a pre-written message the user can send or edit in one tap.
- B2B
- Assign each onboarding task to one named person ("Maria, connect the calendar") instead of to "the team".
What can go wrong
- A specific instruction for a step that is still hard; fix the ability problem too.
- Instructions so long that they bury the action on mobile.
Pairs well with
- Pairs with HK-ACT03 and HK-ACT04: cut steps and effort.
- Pairs with in-t-fn-01: a specific request with a real reason.
